Featuring more than 300 works of art loaned from the Cartier Collection and museums, institutions, and private collectors around the world; the exhibition explored Cartier’s 170-year history designing and producing exquisite jewellery for its glittering international clientele, that included royalty, aristocrats, socialites, and the stars of stage, cinema and music.
Highlights included Dame Nellie Melba’s diamond Stomacher Brooch 1902; the Halo Tiara 1936 worn by Kate Middleton at her wedding to Prince William, Duke of Cambridge and the Williamson Pink Diamond Brooch 1953 featuring 203 white diamonds and one of the rarest, flawless, large pink diamonds in the world, both generously loaned from Her Majesty The Queen’s personal collection; Daisy Fellowes’ Tutti-Frutti Hindu Necklace 1936; Barbara Hutton’s Imperial Jadeite Necklace 1934; Princess Grace of Monaco’s 10.48-carat diamond Engagement Ring 1956 and Dame Elizabeth Taylor’s diamond and Ruby Necklace 1951 (a gift from her third husband Mike Todd) which also can be worn as a tiara.
As well as an intriguing array of Cartier jewellery, timepieces and precious objects, the exhibition included a selection of rarely seen archival drawings and photographs. Plus portraits, film, advertising material, historical jewellery-making tools and equipment, providing an insight into the history of Cartier.
