This major building extension designed by Andrew Anderson AM of PTW Architects, delivered 11 new galleries for Indigenous art, state-of-the-art back of house facilities and a new public entry for the NGA.

The NGA acquired Scottish artist Jim Lambie’s Sound system, a kaleidoscopic floor based architectural installation. Covering the entire area of the foyer, the work created an immersive experience that transformed the dynamics of the space
An extensive renovation of the NGA’s ground floor galleries revealed many of the building’s original architectural features, delivering a new international art gallery and Indian and southeast Asian art displays.
Barnett Newman’s monumental sculpture was loaned to the NGA to coincide with the exhibition American Masters. It was later gifted in honour of the retiring director Dr Gerard Vaughan.
